As Chair of the California Association of Orthodontists’ Legislative Committee, Dr. Kwong was among the CAO members who engaged with legislators on issues impacting orthodontic specialists, their practices, and their patients.
Sacramento, CA – Dr. Jeffrey Kwong, an orthodontist with a private practice in El Dorado Hills, CA and chair of the California Association of Orthodontists’ (CAO) legislative committee, recently attended the second annual, and first in-person, CAO Lobby Day. Along with 13 other CAO member volunteers, he participated in meetings with key legislators at the State Capitol to share concerns and legislative priorities on behalf of all CAO members.
Lobby Day is a grassroots effort to engage with Assembly members, senators, and their staffs to ensure orthodontists have a seat at the table for discussions that impact their patients and practices.
The group of orthodontists educated lawmakers on a variety of issues, including how mail-order aligner cases are often not diagnosed properly and not overseen to ensure treatment is progressing properly, and the lack of informed consent for patients. They also discussed issues related to workforce shortages and healthcare/small business operations.
“Lobby Day was a truly remarkable effort. Actively engaging in approximately 30 meetings in the span of one day with members who are passionate about our specialty and profession was inspiring,” says Dr. Kwong. “I’m proud to work alongside a group of dedicated volunteers, and I encourage other CAO members to join us next year to help expand our reach, and serve our specialty and profession.

While Lobby Day is an important way the legislative committee advocates for patients and orthodontists, the committee actively works towards policy change year-round. CAO takes positions on bills relevant to members and patients, and engages in the legislative process when these bills are heard in the Assembly and Senate.
