Oral Hygiene Brushing

Tooth Brushing:

  • Sulcus Brush – This two-row brush is the brush we would like you to use at home along with your regular brush. First, brush with the sulcus brush and WATER ONLY until you are sure your teeth are free of food and plaque. Then, you can brush with your regular brush and toothpaste. If you use toothpaste at first, it makes it difficult to see if you have effectively removed the plaque and food debris.
  • Travel Brush ”“ This brush is for you to use when you are away from home ”“ at school, at a friend’s house, or when you come to our office for your appointments. Toothpaste is not necessary but can be used if you wish.
Oral Hygiene flossing

Flossing:

We strongly recommend that you floss between your teeth at least once a day. This is especially important if you should develop puffy, swollen gum tissue (gingivitis). We’ll show you how to get the floss under the wire and between the teeth. It takes time and patience to become proficient at flossing ”“ DON’T GIVE UP! We are here to help you if you have any questions or problems with flossing.

Oral Hygiene fluoride

Fluoride:

We also recommend that you use a fluoride rinse during your orthodontic treatment. We will give you a sample of ACT or FLUORIGARD. You can find this rinse at most grocery or drug stores. You should use it every night before going to bed. Brush your teeth as we have described above, then rinse with one ounce (1 oz.) of the fluoride rinse for one minute and spit it out. Do not rinse again with water, because you want to allow the fluoride to remain on your teeth. We also recommend that you continue to see your general dentist for cleanings and fluoride treatments on a regular basis. The use of a fluoride containing toothpaste will help prevent cavities too.
